📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Streamable HTTP and SSE requests now accept JSON bodies up to a configurable size, defaulting to 10 MB. The limit applies to the complete request, including its arguments.
  • Documentation
    • Added configuration guidance covering supported size formats and noting that reverse-proxy limits are configured separately.
  • Tests
    • Verified that large note bodies and requests at the configured limit are accepted, while oversized requests are rejected. Also verified that request rate limits and session validation remain effective.

Adds GITLAB_MCP_REQUEST_BODY_LIMIT, defaulting to 10mb, and applies it to JSON parsing on SSE and Streamable HTTP message routes. Adds documentation and tests for large note bodies, request-size boundaries, route behavior, and throttling.

Changes: Request Body Limit

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configure and apply the request limit
config.ts, .env.example, docs/configuration/environment-variables.md, index.ts
Adds the environment setting, documents its syntax and default, and applies it to SSE /messages and Streamable HTTP /mcp requests. The SSE route validates the session before parsing and passes the parsed body to handlePostMessage.
Validate note sizes and request boundaries
test/note-body-length-schema.test.ts, test/sse-session-limits.test.ts, test/streamable-http-body-limit.test.ts
Tests note bodies at 1,000,000 characters, a 5 MiB SSE message, configured 20 KiB boundaries, oversized requests to /health, and request-rate throttling.

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 4b6d6

Large note requests can use the higher limit while session, authentication, and rate-limit checks remain ahead of body parsing. This review found no current behavior change that blocks merging.

The repository lockfiles resolve body-parser to 2.3.0, while the comment's stated failure mode applies only to versions before 2.3.0. The claimed unbounded-body vulnerability is not applicable to this dependency version.

The repository lockfiles resolve body-parser to 2.3.0, so the premise that the parser version is unknown or may be below 2.3.0 is contradicted. The proposed validation is not supported by this evidence.

Approving.

Dropping the global app.use(express.json()) does not leave another route on this app without a parser. POST /mcp is the only handler that reads req.body, and mcpJsonBodyParser runs after rejectUnknownStatefulSession, mcpRequestRateLimit, mcpBearerAuth, and rejectForeignSession.

OAuth does not use that global parser. SDK mcpAuthRouter (@modelcontextprotocol/sdk 1.31.0) installs its own:

  • POST /register → express.json() in clientRegistrationHandler
  • POST /token and POST /revoke → express.urlencoded()
  • GET/POST /authorize (consent form) → express.urlencoded() before req.body is read

/callback, /downloads/:type, /health, and /metrics are GET and never read a JSON body. GET/DELETE /mcp do not pass a parsed body through.

SSE POST /messages parses only after DNS-rebinding, auth, and a live session check, then passes req.body into handlePostMessage, which is what gets past the SDK's 4 MiB raw-body fallback.

Checked locally without real tokens: the new note-schema, Streamable HTTP body-limit, and SSE body-limit tests pass. A 1,000,000-character note is parsed and then rejected with 401, not 413.
